The North Umpqua Foundation has been pleased to help Pacific Rivers financially over the years to honor this great couple!
Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Sanctuary Legislation Passes the Senate!
Dear Friends of Pacific Rivers,
We’re a big step closer to achieving a goal we set 30 years ago – permanently protecting one of the most important steelhead streams on the west coast! Yesterday, the U.S. Senate passed the Natural Resources Management Act, which includes the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Sanctuary and many other protections for Oregon’s wild rivers and lands!
Pacific Rivers has been working to protect Steamboat Creek since our work with then-Senator Tom McCall on the historic Omnibus Oregon Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1988. In the early 90’s, we helped craft the Aquatic Conservation Strategy (ACS) of the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP), which covers nearly 24 million acres of public land in Oregon, Washington and Northern California, including the Steamboat Creek watershed.
During the last six years, as pressure was mounting to expand logging on public lands within the North Umpqua River basin, we worked closely with Senator Wyden to craft the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Sanctuary to protect the unique ecological character of Steamboat Creek watershed and honor an amazing couple who have spent their lives as passionate stewards and advocates of North Umpqua. We’re grateful to the leadership of Senator Wyden in crafting and shepherding this bill through the Senate!
The House will soon take up companion legislation, and thanks to Rep. Peter DeFazio, we’re almost there. We expect this bill to become law very soon.
Thanks to you, Pacific Rivers will continue to work to protect the watersheds of the Pacific Northwest.

Executive Director
